Insurance Coverage
Most insurance providers, including Medicare, cover treatment for Varicose Veins when medically indicated. Medical indications for treatment include symptomatic venous insufficiency. Symptoms include:
⦁ Pain
⦁ Swelling
⦁ A history of thrombophlebitis (a painful clot in the saphenous vein, usually associated with travel – lengthy car or airplane rides)
⦁ Bleeding from a varicose vein
⦁ Ulcer formation
Venous insufficiency must also be documented by ultrasound – a painless examination performed in the office.
All insurance providers also require a 3 month period of compression therapy with stockings prior to authorizing treatment.
Treatment of spider veins is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance.
